Four variations on Theoretical Physics by Ettore Majorana

چکیده
An account is given of some topical unpublished work by Ettore Majorana, revealing his very deep intuitions and skilfulness in Theoretical Physics. The relevance of the quite unknown results obtained by him is pointed out as well.

In the following we reproduce, translated into English, a section of Volumetto II, a notebook written by Majorana in 1928 when he was still a Physics student at the University of Rome (see S. Esposito, E. Majorana jr, A. van der Merwe and E. Recami (eds.) Ettore Majorana: Notes on Theoretical Physics, Kluwer, New York, 2003). This study was performed by the author when he was preparing his Thes...

متن کاملMajorana returns
Enrico Fermi had to cajole his friend Ettore Majorana into publishing his big idea: a modification of the Dirac equation that would have profound ramifications for particle physics. Shortly afterwards, in 1938, Majorana mysteriously disappeared, and for 70 years his modified equation remained a rather obscure footnote in theoretical physics (Box 1). Now suddenly, it seems, Majorana’s concept is...
متن کاملFollowing Weyl on Quantum Mechanics : the contribution of Ettore Majorana
After a quick historical account of the introduction of the group-theoretical description of Quantum Mechanics in terms of symmetries, as proposed by Weyl, we examine some unpublished papers by Ettore Majorana. Remarkable results achieved by him in frontier research topics as well as in physics teaching point out that the Italian physicist can be well considered as a follower of Weyl in his ref...
متن کاملA peculiar lecture by Ettore Majorana
We give, for the first time, the English translation of a manuscript by Ettore Majorana, which probably corresponds to the text for a seminar lecture delivered at the University of Naples in 1938, where he lectured on theoretical physics. Some passages reveal a physical interpretation of quantum mechanics which anticipates for several years the Feynman approach in terms of path integrals, indep...
